The Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia I 2020

Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at UVA

The MEL honors over 4,000 persons who were enslaved at UVA between 1817 and 1865. Over 75 stone blocks were used in the memorial’s construction to create a tapered toroidal form that is approximately 80 feet in diameter. The volume can be understood geometrically as the intersection of two cones.
